Social media have reacted with a question as to whether Salisu should be invited after the Ghanaian defender delivered a shockingly poor performance in Southampton’s heavy defeat to European champions, Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday when Daniel Amartey and Alexander Djiku are around.
The Blues ran riot, scoring six goals in a 6-0 win over Southampton at Saint Mary’s Stadium, leaving Salisu and his teammates absolutely battered.
On the day, the young defender was one of Southampton’s worst performers. He lost possession 14 times, made one error that led to a goal and came close to scoring an own goal.
Salisu was unable to clear as Mason Mount’s low shot flashed by into the net for the Blues’ second goal of the day, before losing possession to Kai Havertz in the build-up to Timo Werner’s third strike.
The Ghana’s target for World Cup was trending for the right reason prior to Saturday’s game after it was revealed that he has the most interceptions in the league.
Unfortunately, he was unimpressive at the heart of Southampton’s defence and has been criticised for it.
Salisu is not a member of Ghana’s senior national team, despite being one of the country’s best players in Europe.
Salisu has been one of the Ghanaian players, the likes of Inaki Williams, Callum Hudson Odoi, Tariq Lamptey etc chased by Ghana FA to feature for Black Stars in the forthcoming 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar.
However, the 22-year-old feels he isn’t ready for the Black Stars and has turned down several opportunities to play for the West Africans.
Some reactions on social media after Salisu’s poor show against European champions, Chelsea FC
Ghana interim coach Otto Addo recently revealed that he has had positive discussions with Salisu and that the defender will be ready soon.
Salisu has made 29 league appearances for Southampton this season.
But Salisu, regarded as one of the world’s best young defenders, is expected to recover from the horror show and return to form.
